does not work on 5spd manual VW's. Bolt pattern is different.
Confirmed on Amazon that this starter would work with my 5spd TDI Jetta. Went ahead and took a chance on a Chinese built starter knowing a BOSCH is better and direct fit.
Bolt pattern does not line up.

For AUTOMATIC transmissions ONLY
DO NOT order this starter if you have a manual transmission. It will not fit your car.
For a manual tranny car you need the 17780 style starter, not the 17781.
Just installed and Working
The part fit like OEM. Two day shipping took 2 days. Time will tell if it is reliable; just like any product. Installed on a 2002 AVH 2.0 GL Jetta. It was not hard for my master mechanic brother in law. The instructions found on the internet were much too difficult and did not match this model. Removed battery and bottom plate, jacked up car and removed and install from top and bottom. It was very easy for me; as said above, a master mechanic did the work; me- master gofer.
